Lorsqu'on est accueilli au dernier étage du Cneai, on découvre le fonds FMRA, un fonds d'éphéméras et de livres d'artistes composé à ce jour de neuf mille pièces : vinyles, livres, revues, magazines, posters, flyers, stickers, cassettes, dépliants, cartes postales, CD, DVD, pages Web, livres de coloriage… sont visibles sur rendez-vous. Au sein de la collection, des sous-ensembles se sont formés autour de la création sonore et littéraire, des revues et magazines, du graphisme, de la poésie. Axée sur le XXe siècle, la collection prend sa source dans les années 1960. Faire de l'art sous forme publiée revenait alors à s'émanciper des frontières politiques et économiques. Ces œuvres-médias ont en elles un potentiel de reproduction qui annonce le partage de l'autorité artistique avec leurs destinataires, une mutualisation du droit d'auteur. La publication d'artiste constitue encore maintenant une sorte d'histoire de l'art parallèle, composée d'objets gratuits ou trop bon marché pour être vendus en galeries, trop pauvres pour être conservés dans les musées. Par un drôle de paradoxe, plus une édition est ouverte, illimitée, gratuite, plus vite elle devient donc introuvable, car elle emprunte des circuits de diffusion qui ne sont pas balisés et résiste à l'appropriation. Prenant la forme de multiples pauvres, les éphéméras ont un statut d'œuvre d'art sans en avoir la forme consacrée. Plus de deux mille artistes sont représentés dans cette collection, par la part de leur œuvre la moins connue et parfois la plus engagée. The top storey of the Cneai houses the FMRA collection, which consists of nine thousand pieces of ephemera and artist's books, including records, books, reviews, magazines, stickers, cassettes, post cards, cd's, dvd's, web pages, colouring in books… all of which can be viewed by appointment. At the heart of the collection sub-groups are formed under the headings of sound and literary creation, reviews and magazines, graphic design and poetry. Centred on the twentieth century, the collection has its origins in the 1960's. At that time making art in a published form came down to
emancipating it from political and economic boundaries. These media-works had in them the potential for the sharing of artistic authority with their public, a mutualisation of copyright. The publication of an artist still consists of a kind of parallel history of art, composed of objects that are either free or too cheap to be sold in galleries, too poor to be conserved in museums. By a strange paradox, the more open, free and unlimited editions are, the more they become impossible to find, as they take distribution paths less obviously marked and open to appropriation. Taking the form of poor multiples, pieces of ephemera have the status of a work of art without the consecrated form, which simultaneously deprives and protects them from institutional conservation. More than two thousand artists are represented in this collection by the least known, and often, the most engaged part of their body of work.
